Larimar Stone

Found in the province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic, this rare blue stone is called Larimar or the “Atlantis Stone”. Larimar’s blue embodies the earth in the blues of the sea and sky. The first mention of this stone was in 1916, but it did not make its appearance until 1974. Norman Rilling, a Peace Corp volunteer and a local, Miguel Mendez, discovered pieces of the Larimar on the seashores. Locals believed that the sea created the stone while some thought that it was created through volcanic movements. The Larimar is referred to as a ‘healing stone’ as it is considered to have healing properties. When worn around the neck, it is said that it improves the wearer’s ability to communicate. Because of its blue color, it is also referred to as the “Atlantis Stone”.
